Your Hide.
Your Guide.
From the moment you unbox to the compliments that never stop — everything you need is right here.
You Just Made an Exceptional Choice.
The hide you're holding isn't mass-produced. It isn't random. Out of thousands inspected, yours was hand-selected from the top 15%, individually photographed, and shipped directly from our family's Florida warehouse to your door. It's one of a kind — literally. No one else in the world has this exact hide. And now it's yours.
A cowhide rug is the one piece that makes a room feel both effortlessly chic and completely lived-in. There's nothing else quite like it.— Lauren M., Interior Designer, Nashville
Unboxing Your New Hide
Here's exactly what to expect — and how to fall in love with it even faster.
Unroll & Admire
Your hide was professionally folded — hair side in — to protect its natural beauty during transit. Carefully unroll it on a clean, flat surface, hair side up. You may notice some fold lines. Don't worry. These are temporary and will disappear as the leather relaxes. Right now, you're looking at a genuine work of natural art.
Touch It. Really.
Run your hand across the surface. That buttery softness? That's the hallmark of premium Brazilian cowhide — the thickest, most supple hides in the world. A faint, natural leather scent is completely normal and a beautiful sign of authenticity. It fades within days.
Your Hide, Exactly as Promised
Compare your hide to the photos from your order — you'll see it's the exact hide you chose. Every marking, every pattern, every natural variation you see was visible in the listing. Natural brands, scars, and beauty marks aren't imperfections — they're your hide's fingerprint. They're what make it authentically, unmistakably yours.
The Settling Period
Give your hide 1–2 weeks to fully relax and flatten. During this time, you might notice light shedding — this is just loose fibers from the tanning process working their way out. It's completely normal and stops on its own. Think of it like a new cashmere sweater: the first few days are the break-in, and then it only gets better.
Your Hide's First Two Weeks
Here's exactly what to expect — everything below is completely normal.
Get It Perfectly Flat
Shipping folds are temporary. Choose the method that fits your patience level.
🕐 Let Gravity Work
Lay it flat, hair side up. Place books or heavy objects on stubborn edges. In 1–2 weeks, it flattens itself naturally. The easiest approach — and the one most of our customers use.
💧 Damp Cloth Method
Lightly dampen the back (leather) side of any creased area. Don't soak — just moisten. Lay flat with weight on top. The moisture relaxes the leather and speeds up the process. Air dry completely.
⚡ The Iron Trick
Need it flat for tonight? Place a damp cloth on the back side of any crease and press with a household iron on the lowest heat. Move gently. Never touch the hair side. Wrinkles disappear in minutes.
✅ Do
- Iron on back/leather side only, through a damp cloth
- Use the lowest heat — no steam
- Place books on curled corners overnight
- Roll (never fold) your hide for storage
❌ Don't
- Never iron directly on the hair side
- Never use high heat or steam settings
- Don't soak your hide in water
- Don't fold or crease for long-term storage

Caring for Your Hide
Here's the secret no one tells you: cowhide is one of the easiest rugs you'll ever own.
Everyday Care
Vacuum on low or use a Swiffer. Take it outside and shake it occasionally. Rotate in high-traffic areas for even wear. That's truly all it takes. Your hide will reward minimal effort with maximum beauty.
Spills? No Panic.
Cowhide is naturally stain-resistant. Wine, coffee, juice, even red sauce — most spills wipe clean with a damp cloth and mild soap. The golden rule: blot, don't rub. Act quickly and you'll never see a trace.
Pet & Kid Approved
Over 70,000 pet owners trust our hides daily. Unlike traditional rugs, cowhide doesn't trap pet hair — one pass with a vacuum picks everything up. Claws? Handled. Kid spills? They wipe right off. This rug was made for real life.
✅ Best Practices
- Blot spills immediately with a clean, damp cloth
- Use our Cowhide Cleaner for deeper cleaning
- Vacuum gently on low/suction-only setting
- Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight
- Use a rug pad on hard surface floors
❌ Avoid
- Never machine wash or dry clean
- Don't soak or leave wet — blot and air dry
- Skip harsh chemicals, bleach, or abrasives
- Don't place in constantly wet areas
5-Year Stain Protection
Our protection plan covers stains from food, drinks, human and pet fluids for a full 5 years. Didn't add it at checkout? There's still time. Add Protection Plan →
I've used cowhide rugs in hundreds of projects — from Manhattan lofts to Montana ranches. They're the one piece that works everywhere because they bring warmth without trying too hard.— Rachel T., Principal Designer, Denver
Style It Like a Designer
The techniques interior designers actually use — no design degree required.
The Angle Rule
This is the single biggest difference between "nice rug" and "wow." Angle your hide 15–30 degrees off the room's axis. A perfectly straight hide reads stiff and staged. That slight angle creates movement, visual energy, and the effortless look you see in magazines. Try it — you'll never go back.
The Peek-Out Principle
Don't hide your hide under furniture. Let it extend past the edge of your sofa or coffee table so the full shape and pattern are visible. The organic, irregular shape of a cowhide is its beauty — show it off. Let at least 12–18 inches "peek out" on each side.
Layer for Depth
Place your cowhide over a larger neutral rug — sisal, jute, or a flat-weave in a complementary tone. This creates rich visual depth and makes both rugs look more intentional. Designers call it "grounding with texture." It's one of the easiest tricks to make a room feel curated.
Mix Textures, Match Temperatures
Pair your cowhide with a sheepskin on a nearby chair. Add leather or linen pillows on the sofa. The key: mix textures within the same color temperature. Warm hide + warm sheepskin + warm wood = cohesive luxury. Cool grey hide + cool marble + chrome accents = sleek modern.
The Lighting Secret
Your hide is a chameleon. In morning light it'll glow with warm gold tones. Under evening lamps, the browns deepen dramatically. If the color feels "off" after unboxing, try different rooms and different times of day before deciding. Most customers who were initially unsure fell in love once they saw it in natural daylight.
The magic of cowhide is that it's simultaneously rustic and refined. I always tell my clients — angle it, don't center it, and let the shape breathe. It instantly makes the room feel like it was designed on purpose.Megan H., Interior Stylist & Featured in House Beautiful
Room-by-Room Inspiration
Where designers place cowhide rugs — and exactly how to get the look.
Angle under or beside your coffee table. Let 12–18" extend past the sofa edge. The off-center placement creates that relaxed, editorial feel. Pair with cowhide pillows on the sofa for a coordinated look that isn't "matchy."
At the foot of the bed for a luxury hotel feel, or beside it so your feet land on soft cowhide every morning. Layer over existing carpet for warmth and texture. Drape a sheepskin on your reading chair to complete the look.
Under your desk or anchoring a reading area. Cowhide adds warmth to workspaces and rolls beautifully under office chairs. A rug pad keeps it stable. Your Zoom background just got an upgrade.
An XL or XXL hide under your dining table creates a warm, grounding anchor. Spills? Cowhide is naturally stain-resistant — wine wipes clean. Choose a hide larger than your table footprint for the best visual effect.
A smaller or accent hide welcomes guests with immediate texture and warmth. It sets the tone for your entire home. High-traffic? No problem — cowhide is one of the most durable natural floor coverings available.
Don't limit yourself to the floor. Mount your hide on a wall using decorative tacks or clips along the top edge. In a den, office, or above a fireplace — it becomes a stunning, one-of-a-kind art installation.
I've been recommending Cowhides Direct to my clients for years. The quality is consistent, every hide is individually photographed, and my clients always end up ordering a second one. That's how you know it's the real deal.Sarah K., Residential Designer, Scottsdale

How to go from "great rug" to "did you hire a designer?"

Cowhide Pillows
Our double-sided cowhide pillows are the quickest way to tie a room together. Mix patterns within the same color family — brindle rug with tricolor pillows, black-and-white rug with salt-and-pepper pillows. Start with 2–3 for that instant "I hired someone" effect.

Sheepskin Rugs & Throws
Drape a plush New Zealand sheepskin over an accent chair or beside your bed. The contrast — sleek cowhide on the floor, soft sheepskin on furniture — is exactly the layered texture you see in design magazines. It photographs beautifully, too.

Care Essentials
Our specially formulated Cowhide Cleaner keeps your hide vibrant. Pair it with custom rug pads to prevent any slipping on hard floors. Both designed from the ground up for cowhide — because your one-of-a-kind hide deserves purpose-made care.
